The Future: Oil Companies and Clean Energy

The global energy world is changing rapidly today. While society still needs oil and natural gas to fuel transport and make everyday materials, countries want to reduce carbon emissions to stop global climate change. Because of this goal, major oil and gas companies are investing billions of dollars to transform themselves into broader energy providers.

Many traditional petroleum companies are building massive offshore wind farms. Ocean winds are strong and consistent, and energy firms already have decades of engineering experience building steel structures in deep sea waters. They are also building giant solar panel parks in sunny deserts and investing in renewable biofuels made from plants and used cooking oils.

Another exciting technology is Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS. In a CCS facility, special equipment traps carbon dioxide gas from industrial chimneys before it can enter the open atmosphere. Engineers compress the gas into a liquid state and pump it deep underground into spent oil fields and saline rock formations. By combining fossil fuel engineering skills with green technology, energy workers are helping build a cleaner, balanced energy future for the world.
