Cleaning the Air and Protecting Nature

Protecting the environment is one of the most important responsibilities in the modern energy sector. In the past, industrial operations produced unwanted smoke, leaks, and waste. Today, environmental laws are strict, and energy companies invest heavily in clean technologies, advanced sensors, and better operational practices to keep land, air, and water clean.

One major environmental goal is reducing methane leaks. Because natural gas is largely invisible, companies fly airplanes equipped with thermal cameras and use satellite sensors to spot leaks from the sky. On the ground, technicians carry handheld laser detectors along pipelines to find and repair even the smallest gas drips immediately.

Water protection is equally vital. When wells produce oil, salty water from underground often comes up with it. Modern facilities never dump this water into rivers or the sea. Instead, they treat the water thoroughly or pump it back into deep rock formations where it cannot touch freshwater sources. In addition, when an old oil well stops producing, companies plug the hole with thick cement, remove all surface steel structures, and plant native grass and trees so the land returns to nature.
