Oil Storage Tanks: Giant Steel Safes

When traveling near industrial ports or refineries, you will often notice large, round steel cylinders painted white or silver. These massive structures are industrial storage tanks. They serve as safe, temporary holding homes for crude oil, gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. Storage tanks allow refineries to keep running continuously even when tanker ships arrive late or pipelines shut down for scheduled maintenance.

Many oil storage tanks have a clever feature known as a floating roof. Instead of having a fixed steel ceiling, the roof rests directly on top of the liquid fuel inside the tank. As the tank fills with oil, the roof floats upward. When oil is pumped out to customers, the roof gently slides down inside the steel shell.

This floating design serves an important safety and environmental purpose. By sitting directly on the liquid surface, the roof eliminates empty air space inside the tank. Without air space, the oil cannot evaporate into the atmosphere. This prevents the loss of valuable fuel, stops bad smells from spreading into nearby neighborhoods, and prevents the buildup of flammable vapors that could cause dangerous industrial fires.
