On a drilling rig, you will hear workers called “roustabouts” and “roughnecks.” These are traditional job titles for the dedicated, hardworking crew members who keep the drilling platform operating around the clock. Their work requires physical strength, high focus, and excellent teamwork in all types of weather conditions.
Roustabouts are general support workers on the rig. They handle many different maintenance tasks across the platform. They offload cargo, food, and heavy drilling equipment from supply boats using cranes. Roustabouts also wash the decks, clean mud tanks, scrape rust off steel railings, and paint surfaces to protect the rig from salty ocean air. Their work keeps the entire rig tidy, organized, and safe for everyone.
Roughnecks work directly on the drilling floor, which is the busiest and loudest part of the rig. They handle heavy steel drill pipes, attach large mechanical wrenches, and connect new pipe joints as the well goes deeper. When the drill bit wears out, roughnecks help pull miles of pipe out of the hole to change the tool. They learn specialized mechanical skills that prepare them for advanced roles like drillers and supervisors.
